समुद्रमंथन

समुद्रमंथन के समय निकले तो चौदह रत्न थे, पर उनमें से सर्वसाधारण को तत्काल प्रभावित करने वाले दो ही पदार्थ है - एक अमृत, दूसरा विष। अमृत पीने वाले देवत्व बनते थे और सदा अमर रहते थे। विष सदा इसके प्रतिकूल था। उसकी एक बूँद भी गले से नीचे उतर जाने पर मरण निश्चित था। मरण भी अकाल मृत्यु जैसा आश्चर्य और असमंजस भरा। उस समय विष के दुश्परिणामों को देखते हुए भगवान शिव ने उस कालकूट को अपने गले में भर लिया था। न भीतर जाने दिया और न वामन किया। अमृतघट-धन्वतरि के संरक्षण में देवताओं के भंडार में सुरक्षित रखा गया। उसके प्रभाव से वह समूचा क्षेत्र स्वर्ग बन गया।
